Jordy’s Work Transported Us To A Dream Pop Cloud Swirling With Fashion, Music, and Video Game Culture
We met up with Jordy on a pleasant early February afternoon in his old stomping grounds of Bethlehem, PA to discuss his work, aesthetic, influences, and goals and by the end of browsing his portfolio we couldn’t resist adding one of his pieces to our collection.
We’re happy to share with you some examples of his work below
I first got into illustrating during sophomore year of college but they were all mostly just grotesque sketches of potato creatures in my sketchbook. Basically, I moved out by myself for the first time in my life to Millersville and felt overwhelmed by the amount of free time I had. I didn't really go out much and instead worked on things by myself. Wanting to pass the time other than playing Over watch, I decided to draw sketches everyday. It doesn't matter if the sketch was weird or ugly, but at least one sketch per day. That was the start of my journey into illustrating and making art. The sketches turned into more elaborate pieces with colors and different mediums. I started drawing posters and divulged into making semi-trippy art for a while.
I took a game development class in my senior year of college and from then on I was hooked. For the final project, my friend Alex and I made a Metroidvania style RPG game. Utilizing what I learned from that class, I decided to make my own game!
My main inspiration is feelings. Being able to turn emotion into art is one of the main reasons as to why I make art. Whenever I'm feeling alone and melancholy, I like to ride that wave and see what kind of art will transpire from it. Listening to music also inspires me.
Urban street wear, internet Hypebeast fashion are cool! It's a look I can never pull off, but I respect anyone who does. I adore people who wear cool article of clothing with confidence so I like to draw my characters with modern fashion apparels.
I can't make art without background music or sound so music definitely inspires my work. Men I Trust, Toro y Moi, You'll Never Get To Heaven, No Vacation, Jay Som, Katana Zero OST, Brockhampton.
In the end, the idea of turning a blank canvas into something I'm excited about and look forward to sharing with the world, is marvelous. A slice of time being patched with creativity.
